- Uses rhythm, rhyme and figurative language (language that put a picture in your mind. NOT meant to be taken literally)

- There is usually an accident/disaster in the beginning which puts the main character at risk or leaves them in stranded in a dangerous place.
- has lots of action in the plot
- the main character has to complete a dangerous/difficult/unexpected task to solve his/her problem.
- Written as if the story were real and in present day.
