Welcome to Language Arts

I am looking forward to a fun and productive year. In or
der to prepare for the new school year, it would be helpful if your student had the following supplies:
  • Binder with dividers
  • Blue/black and red pens (or really any color in addition to blue/black)
  • Pencils
  • Correction tape (we all make mistakes!)
  • Lined paper
  • A smiling face : )
General Information

This year we will be participating in the AR program. Many of you are familiar with this program, if you are not, be sure to ask your student to tell you all about it in the weeks to come.

Word Study Lists are handed out (and posted on my blog) on Monday; I review the words on that day. The test is on Thursday. If a student doesn’t pass the test, he/she may retake it for up to a 70% .

Help and Retest Times:

  • Monday or Wednesday during advisory (get permission from your teacher before coming to my room
Our weekly schedule will include:
  • Journal writing
  • Word Study
  • Grammar activities
In addition to reading for pleasure, we will be exploring:
  • Narratives such as; mysteries, memoirs, dramas, poetry, myths, legends
  • Informational reading such as: persuasive essays, research reports, brochures, autobiographies and biographies
We will be writing:
  • Fictional narratives such as: mysteries, memoirs, dramas, poetry, myths, legends
  • Research reports
Orally, we will:
  • Plan, practice and deliver an informational speech
Final copy papers (big projects, not daily work) need to be done using the following format:
If done by hand, the paper should be:
·        Written on loose leaf (normal lined paper)
·        In blue or black ink
·        Neatly written

 If typed:
·        Size 12 font
·        Double spaced (please be kind to my old eyes!)
·        Times New Roman font

All papers need to have:
·        Full name
·        Date
·        Hour in right hand corner

I hope this answers most of your questions. Please feel free to contact me at mpeters@staff.spartaschools.org or 887-8211 ext. 318.

I look forward to hearing from you : )
