Week of March 8

The new trimester begins : )

Monday= Word Study 3.1 handed out. The complete list can be found on the left hand side of this blog. In addition, we reviewed similes and metaphors. The students were assigned two poems for homework. Student were given 10 points for a good faith effort, 7 for turning in an incomplete/late assignment or zero for work that is completely wrong or not turned in.

Assignment requirements:

• Write a poem with at least three simile verses.
• Write a second poem with at least three metaphor verses
• Both poems need to be neatly done, illustrated, in poem form, and have no spelling errors.
• If students ran into troubles with their metaphor poem, they could complete the metaphor worksheet instead of the second poem. We will use that worksheet later to reteach the concept.

Tuesday = Slam poetry - we will watch a variety of slam poems and learn about the history and conventions of this genre. All students will be writing a slam poem; some will be performing it as well.

Wednesday = We will view another slam poet, discuss and write about the poem's meaning, and as a class write a "Hard Decision" poem.

Thursday = Students will be given time to work on their own "Hard Decision" poem.

Friday = Word Study 3.1 test will be given. Share poems and read.
